Yet they cause extreme difficulties for many people, including educators who have to support learners with numeracy needs. However, the teaching of fractions, decimals and percentages has come a long way, with new research providing insights into highly effective teaching methods. Some of them are even fun!
This workshop introduces key concepts of fractions, decimals and percentages and strategies to develop understanding. It provides an introduction to the Numeracy Toolbox course for those wishing to further develop their skills.
Workshop level
This is a Level 1 (introductory) workshop. No prior knowledge is required.

This workshop is useful for all educators and is also suitable for people who dislike numeracy. It’s a safe, fun, and interesting workshop.

- Proportional reasoning and its connection to fractions, decimals and percentages.
- New research about developing understanding of the key concepts.
- Strategies to develop learner skills and knowledge.

Dr Damon Whitten – a specialist provider of professional development to the tertiary sector, with a background in adult literacy and numeracy.

In addition to the live workshop, participants will have access to self-directed content available through the Ako Aotearoa Language, Literacy and Numeracy Educator Pathway on Pathways Awarua [This Pathway is currently under development]. This complementary content will allow you to explore the topic in greater depth at your own pace and in your own time, reinforcing the practical skills and knowledge gained during the workshop.
